As promised, the story of our “Best Dish in North Carolina” winners continues with the second part of a two part coverage article highlighting the culinary accomplishments of Keith Rhodes (owner and head chef of Catch restaurant/ head chef at Deluxe restaurant) and Scott Haulman (owner of Deluxe restaurant). Pictured here, Keith accepts his award from Paula Deen and Dine Wilmington Online.com was there to cover it!The North Carolina Department of Agriculture put on the recent contest, “Best Dish in North Carolina” to award restaurants who put to regular use North Carolina products in their menus. The dish that afforded Keith with the casual dining award was North Carolina lump crab cake on yellow curry potato salad with micro greens; a sweet potato salad with goat cheese, organic spinach, coconut shavings, and blueberries with Thai basil blueberry dressing; and an entrée of broiled mahi. Almost all of the items in the dishes were organic, and all of them, selected from local farms, waters, and markets of NC to bring the taste of home to the judges’ palates. Paula Deen presented Keith with the awards Wednesday night at Raleigh’s Dorton Arena during the start of the her cooking show, “Paula’s Home Cooking”, as she continues her tour for the Food Network. She greeted Keith with famous Paula Deen enthusiasm, giving him a high five and a hug to boot as he accepted the first award for the casual cuisine category. The second time Keith came up with Scott Haulman to accept the award for the fine dining she turned and gave an over the shoulder glance to the crowd that most explicitly said, “Ya’ll…I just cannot believe he won two of these!” Growing up just down the road in Sneeds Ferry, Keith’s North Carolina roots make him partial to using as many North Carolina products as he can in his dishes. Having great relationships with the local growers and fisheries, he believes in supporting the local North Carolina economy and the wonderful products that it has to offer. Please stop by 215 Princess Street (between 2nd and 3rd Street) from 10-2 on weekdays and give Keith another well deserved “congratulations”, as he has certainly made our city and state proud.
