In tough economic times, it is a rarity in this ever growing community to find a restaurant owner that has an establishment that has lasted through our city growth and ever growing competitive market. J. Michael’s Philly Deli is one of the most rare and best examples in our community of an original concept that has with stood the test of time. J. Michael Hutson & his partner Lou Nieper, have been friends, co-workers and business partners who will celebrate 30 years in business. The restaurant J. Michaels’s Philly Deli, which brought the Philly Cheese steak sandwich to Wilmington, has done it by “being 100% family affordable.” J. Michael Hutson has long established himself within our Wilmington community with charitable support, focus on customer service and the time honored Philly sandwiches. When he came to Wilmington in 1979 he convinced his friend Lou Nieper to join him, both were strangers to the restaurant business. View the Menu According to Huston, who having worked as a steel worker in Philadelphia, while paying his way through Barber school, he fell hard for the famous Philly steak sandwiches. By deciding to move to Wilmington, he and Nieper, are the men who brought the original Philly Cheese Steak to town. Soon to celebrate their 30th year in business, the duo have also recently earned global recognition from Food and Drink Magazine. The upcoming issue will feature the local entrepreneurs and highlight the local restaurants success and history. The Hanover Center, site of the original restaurant was where the first J. Michael’s Philly Deli was established. It wasn’t until 2001 until the second was built in Porters Neck and 2004 when the third was established in Monkey Junction. According to Hutson, “the expansions were not made because of the economic growth of Wilmington but of the need to provide for his employees.” “We have had many employees who have grown up serving in the restaurant, gone on to earn a college degree and have stayed with us. We wanted to provide career opportunities to them and needed to provide room for employee growth.” Currently employing around 140 people, the restaurant is one of very few that provides the employees with benefit packages. “We recently had someone retire after 25 years of service and that is a proud feeling – we hope to have many more,” states Hutson. How have they survived the test of time? “We are 100% Family Affordable!,” declares Huston and, Nieper adds “ we were the first ever to do call in Pick-up way back when the drive up’s only provided pre-cooked fast food. The Hanover Center location did it curb side almost 30 years ago and it accounted for about 10% of our business then. With the opening of the two newer locations and the call in drive up windows, we have increased that to over 30% of our business today.” Opportunity for employees, benefits, promoting from within, family, and a great product is the J. Michael’s Philly way. |
