The Weight of a Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lisa Layman

If it were as easy as a simple mathematical equation, logic would dictate that the review of a critic would equal 1 and every review of the consumer would hold equal weight. I offer no disrespect to reviews, but, what I find as the best indicators are your reviews - that of the consumer. What I find very disturbing is when I hear that someone will not try a restaurant because they have read a review and decided to base their opinion and choice based on that review. I always say, "take it with a grain of salt". Although reviews are interesting to read, your opinion is the one that truly matters. In our eyes, you are the best critics, don't let anyone take that away from you. In response to a recent review of Buoy 32, I offer you the opinion of the Waterford Dining Group. Every month Dine Wilmington Online.com helps arrange for 30-40 of their members to enjoy a different dining experience in our locally owned restaurants. With the permission of Joe Metell, who provides the write-up for the Water Ways Magazine (Waterford's Community Newsletter), I would like to provide you with a second opinion, one which in my mathematics equals 29 - 1.

WOW!!!  Wilmington has arrived on the restaurant map of the United States with BUOY 32, the newest restaurant in Wrightsville Beach.

The dining experience brought to Wilmington by Eric Gephart, owner
and chef, is INCREDIBLE!  Eric, a native of Hillsborough, NC, was trained at the famous Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY and it shows.

As many of my fellow Waterford Dining Group attendees said at our November Dinner, this is a dining experience like no other in the area.

The food is American, with entrees averaging $20-25.  Sounds a little pricey until you see the unique plating of each entree, take your first bite and realize the intensive care taken by the chef to prepare each plate.

Here are just some of the comments from the 29 of us who attended:

  • To start, a number of us had the special She Crab Soup and is it special!  The blend of crab (lots of it) and sherry made this the best any of us have tasted.  And, it was served at the proper temperature.

  • Those who sampled the House Salad got a wonderful surprise with the addition of a Macadamia Nut Encrusted Chevre Cheese round.

  •  Jane, our resident crab cake expert, drooled over her entree of Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes.  As she said, “They were almost
100% lump crab meat. How do they stay together?!”  And, she had the leftovers in her Sunday morning omelet.

  •  I thought we were going to have to pick Doug up off the floor when they brought out his plate with a whole blackened Drum Fish done to perfection.  I think everybody at his table had a taste.

  •  Frank said, you know Filet Mignon is tender when you can cut it with a fork!

  •  Ann had the Combo Grilled Shrimp skewer, Scallop Skewer and a Crab Cake.  She however did not drool like Jane (much more reserved from Upstate NY), but loved every tasty morsel.

  • Val, Lisa and I had the Spiced Yellow Fin Tuna with a Chili Mango Glaze served atop Wasabi Mashed Potatoes and Baby Bok Choy.  The tuna was the most incredible grade of tuna any of us have had and the playoff of flavors with the Wasabi Mashed Potatoes was ethereal.

  •  Carol and Nick had the Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin in an Apple Puree Sauce. To die for!!!!

  •  And Barbara, our Wilmington native who lives on a deserted island, had the Crab Encrusted Salmon with a Miso-sake Sauce.  Thankfully I sat next to her so I tasted the sauce - sweet with a bite, oooooh!

We all clapped loudly when Eric came out and talked to each table.  When was the last time the chef shared his ingredients and preparations!

This is not one of those restaurants where you taste and then go to McDonald’s to fill up.  We were all very well fed and except for one nameless person had no room for dessert. Going out the door all I kept hearing was, let's come back again SOON.
